Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Jill Scott was raised by both her grandmother and mother. The only child she has. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. Scott completed her secondary school education as well as working two jobs. She wanted to be the high school's English teacher. After three years of being a teacher's aide and studying, her dream to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. She began her career as a spoken word artist, performing her own work during live poetry readings. She eventually linked up with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. Through the Roots performance, she declared herself as an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience as a performer during the Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
